Master of None
Curated by Heidi Norton and Kate Steciw of Vantage Points
April 19th 2023 - May 22nd 2023
“No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatsoever at any time. There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction; a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others.”-Martha Graham
Heidi Norton and Kate Steciw have curated a selection of works from Vantage Points* students and instructors centered around ideas of failure, mastery, possibility and impossibility, craft, working hard and being “good enough”. The term “Jack of all Trades” comes to mind when thinking of the current creative climate. We toil in a morass of endless possibilities and approaches facilitated and complicated by youtube tutorials, big box home improvement stores, DIY kits and computer programs. There are not enough hours in the day or years in a human lifespan to make use of all of the material, surfaces, devices and applications available to us. Yet we persist as our attention spans grow shorter and shorter. The works in this show convey a kind of frenetic mental space and an almost fetishistic approach to materials and tools that reflects this contemporary condition yet, at the same time exhibit an earnest desire for connection and consecration that feels prescient in our ever more ephemeral existence.
