Al Svoboda
The subject of my practice is based in a calculated apprehension to our world, affirming all cause and effect as controlled by an illogical spectrum of chance. Exploring the capability for reinventing ostensibly confirmed ideas and systems, I look to scrutinize the moments before and after transformation, potential, result and the ephemeral. In the ‘Landings’ series, there is a malleable and shifting, secret distance between painting and stapling, removing and moving, fixing and seeing. Presented like a conversation, edited again and again only to be left inconclusive and open ended, there is a propagation of disillusion or disbelief, not resolution or explanation.
Al Svoboda (*1991) grew up in Syracuse, New York, a post-industrial city in central New York State. He received his BFA in Sculpture from Syracuse University and went on to participate in a formative guest residency at Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, Germany in 2013, culminating in an exhibition in the same city. Recent exhibitions include a solo presentation of paintings at 57W57 Arts in New York City, as well as participation in group shows in London and Karlsruhe, Germany. Svoboda lives and works in New York City.
