Pamela Markus’ work lives at the intersection of photography and sculpture. In the studio, she constructs abstract sculptures that she photographs; she also develops collaged photographs into wood sculptures. She is like an architect without a plan, improvising a cycle of construction, wreckage and reconstruction. The work oscillates between the two-dimensional photograph and the three dimensions of sculpture. Layered, and at times visually confusing, nothing appears solid and dependable anymore. Once things fall apart, they do not come back together seamlessly and the resulting work seems fragmented, imbalanced and incomplete.
