In Adam Novak’s view, art, and painting in particular, flirts with visual desire and the need to fantasize, confront, and create. To emphasize this point, the artist has created a pictorial world in which there is only one character: Steve. As an object of desire, a stand-in for the artist, and a vehicle to explore the formal and narrative possibilities within painting, Steve allows Novak to upset the tradition of the female nude by upturning the gender of the muse, comment on desire, and also depict technology.
Adam Novak lives and works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Exhibitions include Vision Valley at the Brand Art Center in Glendale, CA; Alter Ego at Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, GA; and Vanishing Points at James Cohan Gallery in New York. He was awarded a Pollock Krasner grant in 2018, and his work has been written about in Hyperallergic and the Brooklyn Rail. Novak has BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute.
