Drawing on years in clothing and textile design, Tamsen Williams makes sculptures that investigate themes of displacement and trauma. Rooted in distorted human forms, soft body parts made from leftover bits of post-production fabric contrast with hard materials like concrete and ceramic. These sculptures and installations are mutable, limbs are interchangeable and easily lost, maybe found, as Williams explores our sense of alienation, both within our bodies and our communities.
Tamsen Williams works from a studio in Portchester, New York. Recent exhibitions include Behaving Badly at the Lockwood Gallery and a solo show, Dying Gaul, at Fairfield University. Williams has a BA from Yale University, an AAS from the New School and studied textile design at the Bangalore Textile Institute in Bangalore, India.
