Shira Schwarz uses a range of craft-based and art-making methods to engage with the study of gendered practices, imagery, and constructs. This textile piece is made with a tight warp and loose weft, an intuitive gesture alongside a conviction to treat it critically, and a questioning of the narrative that merit is correlated with a certain class of skills. This relationship between looseness and restraint—literal, figurative, psychic—as it's shaped through a conditioned lens, serves as an ongoing source of inquiry.
Shira Schwarz lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She earned a BFA in Painting from Cornell University and exhibits in New York City.
