Acrylic on wood
12 x 10 x 1 in

Julie Torres’ paintings on wood and found objects gravitate toward crude outcomes, telling a story of what has happened there. The result of impulsive experimentation, acrylic comes straight out of the tube and is left undisturbed or is mixed directly on the surface. Failed attempts are forever fused within the work. No failure is discarded. Big messes can be resolved years later. 2D paintings become 3D objects which stand or lean independently. The resulting work pushes against the expectation that a painting hangs on a wall. Many works offer alternate, contradictory paintings on opposing sides.

Julie Torres is a Hudson NY-based artist and curator. Torres’ artwork and projects have been covered by PBS, Hyperallergic, The Brooklyn Rail, Huffington Post, Wall Street Journal, Gawker, Gothamist and Two Coats of Paint. She co-directs LABspace gallery in Hillsdale NY with partner and fellow artist Ellen Letcher.
